Summertime Sadness

Okay, so I’m sure you’ve all heard this song a bajllion times, right? Yeah, me too. I remember the first time I heard it. It was during Spring Break in Miami, hanging out in the living room of our condo at the Viceroy with some (at the time) strangers who have become part of my [rave] family. I remember loving the beat. Dancing around while I was getting ready with my girlfriends. And now, nearly 7 months later.. and I’ve definitely got that summertime sadness.

a night out in Miami, back when I first heard this song.

Summer has always been my favorite season. No school, doing absolutely nothing (or at least trying not to), and just spending more time with friends than usual. This past summer was different, as I knew it would be. I graduated college in May, and moved back home with my mom to help her health get better. This was the first summer ever when most of my friends weren’t just a 5 minute car ride away. All of us have begun our lives. Living with our boyfriends, working real jobs, and not having all of the time in the world to just… be. What was also different about this summer was that I actually made it a point to appreciate all of the amazing things as they were happening AND took time off of work to hang out with my friends and take short little trips when I had the opportunity to do so. So, even though I enjoyed it while it was happening, it just went by too quickly and it’s already too cold.

This is the original version of the song. The video is absolutely beautiful. Until I actually saw the real music video a few months later, I didn’t know what this song was actually about.

So, the moral(s) of this post.. enjoy life as it’s happening, make time for fun because we’re getting older and the opportunities are dwindling, and you may not know what something actually means until you see it in a different light [or music video].
